The Science & Nonduality Conference

by Joel Pitney

Calling all consciousness researchers, neo-mystics, and anyone else interested in finding out just how far the conversation between science and spirit has come. The annual Science & Nonduality will be held in San Rafael, California, on October 20-24. The goal of the conference, which brings together a diverse lineup of spiritual teachers, consciousness researchers, psychologists, artists, philosophers, and more, is to explore the implications of nonduality, or oneness, from as many angles as possible.

At EnlightenNext, we’re looking forward to the conference for a lot of reasons. Continue reading…

A New Theology of the Cosmos (Think About This)

by Joel Pitney

In a recent article for the website Big Questions Online, British author and former priest Mark Vernon made a very interesting proposition. In our secular age, where most of us no longer believe in the traditional versions of God and divinity, Vernon suggests that the science of cosmology has become a new form of theology:

Why is cosmology so popular? Books by writers such as Paul Davies and Stephen Hawking on fine-tuning or the multiverse routinely become bestsellers. They’re good writers, of course. And there’s the aesthetic appeal of cosmology too, offering a ceaseless stream of heavenly images at which to wonder and gaze. But I suspect there’s more to it than that. Continue reading…

What’s the Matter with Materialism?

by Elizabeth Debold

With the “new” atheism getting more and more publicity by the day, it seems important to amplify voices that recognize just how dangerous it is to lose touch with Spirit given the materialism and secularism of our postmodern era. Perhaps few have made this point more strongly or eloquently than Huston Smith in his epic 2001 book, Why Religion Matters: The Fate of the Human Spirit in an Age of Disbelief. I reviewed this book for a special EnlightenNext magazine supplement called WIE Extra (WIE for our former name What Is Enlightenment?). Since it was only distributed to a few thousand subscribers back then, I thought that it would make a good read for our online readers. I’m sure you’ll find that Smith’s message is as relevant today as it was when it was published. Enjoy! Continue reading…

EnlightenNext MP3: Dr. Ervin Laszlo

by Joel Pitney

The Conscious Universe

Click here to purchase the full interview.

Ervin Laszlo’s name is virtually synonymous with much of today’s new philosophy, new science, and new spirituality. No serious discussion of cybernetics, social systems theory, evolution biology, or the nature of consciousness can fail to mention his name or refer to his work. Here, in intimate conversation with EnlightenNext senior editor Elizabeth Debold, Dr. Laszlo discusses his thoughts, concerns, and hopes for humankind’s future and for the evolution of consciousness in, and as, the universe itself. A New Paradigm for Science (Think About This)

    by Joel Pitney

At EnlightenNext magazine, we’ve engaged with hundreds of philosophers, scientists, and spiritual teachers over the years in our ongoing quest to define a new evolutionary worldview. Through these dialogues, we’ve been able to explore and illuminate the relevance of that worldview in far-ranging cultural domains. On May 15th, we’ll be bringing this multidimensional inquiry off the printed page and onto the airwaves as some of our longtime collaborators join us for a free virtual seminar called “The Evolutionary Worldview” (click here to register). To give you a taste of what to expect on May 15th, we’ll be posting you a choice selection of audio and video clips over the coming weeks from our favorite interviews with these featured guests.

First on our list is Marilyn Schlitz, President of the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS), whom we interviewed for the current issue of EnlightenNext magazine (on newsstands now). Continue reading…

Brian Swimme on Emptiness and the Quantum Vacuum

    by Joel Pitney

brian_swimme1In the production of every issue of EnlightenNext, there are difficult moments when the editor’s job calls for some hard decisions. Whether due to space constraints, subject matter, or other factors, inevitably there are some fascinating dialogues that we are unfortunately unable to present in the pages of the magazine. The following excerpt was taken from an interview conducted for Issue 19 of EnlightenNext. This dialogue with Brian Swimme, visionary cosmologist and Core Faculty member for the Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness Program at the California Institute of Integral Studies, is a mind-expanding exploration of the mysteries at the interface of quantum physics and spirituality.
