A Secret History of Consciousness

by Joel Pitney

Few people have the capacity to convey the wild and fascinating history of the occult and the characters who shaped this underground spiritual movement like Gary Lachman, a London-based scholar and former bassist for the band Blondie. His depth of knowledge on evolution, consciousness, and pop culture paired with his unique story telling ability, have made him a favorite contributor to EnlightenNext magazine, and his articles like 2013: Or What To Do When the Apocalypse Doesn’t Arrive, Mrs. Satan, and Mary Wollstonecraft and the Romantic Consciousness, have added an important occult dimension to our ongoing exploration of the evolutionary worldview.

This coming Saturday from 5:30-7:30 pm (London time), Lachman will be engaging in a live public dialogue with the Director of EnlightenNext Europe, Chris Parish, at our center in London. The title of the talk is “A Secret History of Consciousness,” based on the title of Lachman’s 2003 book, and they will be exploring the saga of consciousness: how consciousness and its evolution have been understood over time by esoteric thinkers, philosophers, and spiritual masters. The Evolution of EnlightenNext Magazine

by Joel Pitney

Since its inception as a small semiannual publication in 1992, EnlightenNext magazine has spent nearly two decades tracking and shaping the leading edge of contemporary spiritual thought.

Initially bearing the name What Is Enlightenment?, the magazine was founded by spiritual teacher Andrew Cohen as a vehicle for making sense of often competing ideas about the nature and relevance of enlightenment in our time. Featuring interviews with hundreds of respected mystics, yogis, philosophers, activists, futurists, and scientists, it soon became known as one of the world’s most authoritative forums for serious spiritual inquiry, eventually evolving into an award-winning international quarterly published in multiple languages in print and online.

Over the last ten years, EnlightenNext has dedicated itself to helping define a truly comprehensive and progressive evolutionary spirituality for the twenty-first century. Bringing its unique perspective to bear on many different domains of contemporary life, from spirituality and religion to business, science, politics, the arts, and the environment, the magazine has sought to explore and illuminate the growing role we all can play as active participants in the continuing evolution of consciousness and culture.

This timeline display, organized into four distinct eras, illustrates the evolution of EnlightenNext over the past eighteen years and includes all forty-six issues of the magazine.

Consistency Is Everything

by Joel Pitney

Many of us have experienced spiritual inspiration at talks, at seminars, and on retreats with spiritual teachers. But how do we consistently live the deepest truths we’ve discovered?

This is one of the most important questions for anyone interested in sustained spiritual evolution to answer for themselves. And this Thursday evening (June 10th), EnlightenNext’s director of education Jeff Carreira and Integral Enlightenment founder Craig Hamilton (and former EnlightenNext magazine editor), two long-time practitioners of an evolutionary spiritual path, will be hosting a free webinar and conference call on this subject.

Drawing on over 40 combined years of serious spiritual practice and from their work as pioneering figures in the world of evolutionary spirituality, Carreira and Hamilton will share how periods of focused and intensive retreats have led both of them to profound experiences of spiritual depth that have inspired and fueled all of their work with evolutionaries around the world. They will also discuss their understanding of how working together and engaging in spiritual practice and dialogue with like-minded individuals forms the foundation for consistent spiritual evolution. This teleseminar will be a candid inquiry into what it really takes to traverse and navigate through the complex endeavor of living an evolutionary life in today’s world.

The 90-minute call is titled “Depth & Consistency: Exploring the Keys to Transformation” and will begin at 5:30 Pacific time. If you can’t make it during that time, you can still download a recording of the call by registering. You can learn more about the call and register by clicking here.

EnlightenNext MP3: Robert Wright

by Joel Pitney

The Evolution of God

Click here to purchase the full interview.

Award-winning author and journalist Robert Wright promises that his new book, The Evolution of God, “will antagonize just about everyone—Jews, Christians, Muslims, new agers, and atheists alike.” In it, this recognized authority on human moral development and evolutionary psychology presents the controversial notion that God has evolved alongside culture since prehistoric times.

In a series on his new book, EnlightenNext senior editor Elizabeth Debold interviewed Wright (also the author of Nonzero: The Logic of Human Destiny and The Moral Animal). The first part of the interview is an exploration of how our understanding of God has changed in response to technological, political, and social development, from early hunter-gatherer clans and chiefdoms to modern monotheistic religions. Defining religion as a stabilizing force throughout history, Wright argues that the spiritual traditions have always pulled humanity to a higher moral truth and kept society from falling into chaos.

In the second part, Wright continues his exploration into humanity’s changing views of God, from ancient Egyptian myths to present day religions. Driven by his interest in redefining and “re-enchanting” our ideas about the divine for modern times, he takes into account all that we know about evolution, biology, and human history. Arguing that, even though we can no longer rely on old belief systems to understand divinity, within the desire to know God is an indispensible spark of truth that is in line with “the moral code of the universe.”

In Search of Sacred India Pt. 7: A Surrender to Spirit

by Joel Pitney

There we were at the sacred Harkipauri ghat in Haridwar, India. It was a mythical scene. The moon was full in the dusk sky. The flowing waters of the Ganges river were lit up by thousands of multicolored lights on the buildings adorning its banks in celebration of the Indian holiday of Holi. And our evolutionary entourage, led by our spiritual teacher Andrew Cohen, had just completed what could only be described as a daylong magical mystery tour through the wild and holy camps of the 2010 Kumbh Mela gathering (check out this short film, “Evolution in the Land of Enlightenment,” that we made about the trip). Leave the Door Open for That Which Is New (Quote of the Week)

by Andrew Cohen

open-door-fieldWithout being aware of it, many of us tend to base our sense of what’s possible now, in this present moment, upon what has or has not happened in the past. But if we want to be spiritually liberated, indeed, if we want to be an expression of evolution-in-action, we have to dare to look beyond everything we already know. We have to leave the door open for the unimaginable. We have to stop weighing and measuring what’s possible now by what has already happened. We have to let go of all the conscious and unconscious cynicism that has become habitual in our way of thinking. Continue reading…

Field Report: Opening Night at the Parliament of the World’s Religions

by Joel Pitney

Picture 1As we mentioned in a previous blog post, a generous donor has made it possible for EnlightenNext founder Andrew Cohen and a small team from EnlightenNext to travel to Melbourne, Australia to participate in the 2009 Parliament of the World’s Religions. Over the coming week, we’ll be posting notes from the field written by former EnlightenNext editor Amy Edelstein and EnlightenNext’s Director of Education, Jeff Carreira. Here’s the first one from Edelstein, describing the opening ceremonies: Continue reading…

Attention: EnlightenNext is Evolving

by Carter Phipps

announcer-realAs you may have read on the blog over the past couple of weeks, EnlightenNext is in the midst of an exciting evolution. Last Thursday I had a chance to speak about some of the changes that are underway when I appeared as a guest on an episode of the EnlightenNext Weekly Webcast. The show is an hour long podcast hosted by my colleagues Elizabeth Debold and Jeff Carreira in which they explore a variety of themes through the perspective of Evolutionary Enlightenment, the spiritual teaching pioneered by EnlightenNext founder Andrew Cohen (this was actually the final webcast for 2009, as we’re taking some time off for re-envisioning). I’ve posted a clip from the show below in which Elizabeth and I give an overview of our current situation and share some of our ideas for the future. I hope you enjoy it and welcome any feedback you have to offer:
