Systems Master: Gregory Bateson

by Bergen Vermette

Gregory Bateson was a pioneer thinker on systems of relatedness. His ideas were born in our modern era, which is largely dominated by the scientific worldview. This world-view, while granting many of us untold benefits of wealth, health, and freedom, has also had significant negative impacts on the planet. Part of the issue may lie in an insistence on reductionist materialism – that is, looking at parts (often small parts) and seldom systems.

Bateson rallied against the norm and charted a new path. He dedicating his life to exploring new ways of perceiving reality and the subtle interrelatedness we all participate in. His thinking pushed the limits of the scientific worldview, far beyond simple reductionism. Continue reading…

Spiritual Masters: Father Thomas Keating

by Bergen Vermette

During the latter half of the 20th Century, many progressive seekers in the west left the traditions of their upbringing and headed east in search of mystical truth. For many, mainstream Christianity had become devoid of many of the mystical elements that it once possessed, and those hungry for more often looked abroad. Father Thomas Keating took a different approach. Drawing on ancient source texts of the Christian contemplative tradition – such as, The Cloud of Unknowing, St. Teresa of Avila, and St. John of the Cross – Fr. Keating undertook a collaborative effort to revive the Christian mystical and contemplative tradition.

Father Thomas Keating is an American Trappist monk and priest from the Roman Catholic tradition. The Abbot at St. Benedict’s Monastery in Snowmass, Colorado, he is one of the founding members of Contemplative Outreach, Ltd., an international, ecumenical spiritual network that teaches the Christian contemplative practice of Centering Prayer and Lectio Divina. A true living master of the Christian tradition, Father Keating is an advocate for the resurgance of spiritual mystiscism in Catholicism and some consider him to be one of the few genuinely realized Christian saints alive today. He is the latest addition to our ongoing series about spiritual masters.

Spiritual Masters: J. Krishnamurti

by Joel Pitney

Next up in our Spiritual Masters Series is the great “non-teacher,” Jiddu Krishnamurti. This south Indian native was adopted at the age of 11 by Dr. Annie Besant, then President of the Theosophical Society, and groomed to be what she called the next “World Teacher,” a role that he would ultimately renounce in 1929. Though he travelled and lectured around the world about his post-traditional Dharma of transformation to hundreds of thousands of people, he explicitly said that he was not a Guru and said that seekers were better to look within themselves for the truth than to a teacher. Nevertheless, his teachings inspired millions and he is known as one of the most significant spiritual and philosophical minds of the 20th century. Continue reading…

Spiritual Masters: Steve McIntosh on Jesus of Nazareth

by Bergen Vermette

If your familiar with the work of Steve McIntosh, then you’ve most likely read his ideas about philosophy (His work has been featured in EnlightenNext magazine). McIntosh, who is a Boulder, Colorado-based author and entrepreneur, is known as one of the leading proponents and cataloguers of a new strain in the the history of philosophy called “integral.” In fact, as a founding member of Ken Wilber’s integral institute and the author of the 2007 book Integral Consciousness and the Future of Evolution, he has established himself as one of the preeminent integral philosophers of our time. But even though he has been involved in many dimensions of the progressive and evolutionary spirituality movements, much less is known about his personal spiritual beliefs.

That’s why we’re so excited to be featuring a conversation between McIntosh and EnlightenNext founder Andrew Cohen on March 26th about his deep spiritual relationship to Jesus of Nazareth during the virtual celebration,“Awakening to Your Highest Self.”

Spiritual Masters: Rabbi Zalman Schachter on the Sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe, Yosef Yitzchok Schneersohn

by Bergen Vermette

On March 26th, EnlightenNext founder Andrew Cohen will interview the Sufi-Hasidic Jew, Rabbi Zalman Schachter (Reb Zalman). The two will speak about Reb Zelman’s relationship to his teacher the Sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe, Yosef Yitzchok Schneersohn, during the online celebration “Awakening to Your Highest Self: Tales of Transformation from 25 Spiritual Luminaries.”

The Sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe, Yosef Yitzchok Schneersohn, was a Russian-born Jew who fought for the preservation of Judaism in the newly formed Soviet Union. The Rebbe was arrested for “counter revolutionary” activities in 1927, and was sentenced to death for his pro-Judaism activities and rallies against those who would outlaw the religion. Though he was imprisoned, his death sentence was ultimately commuted and he was able to make his way to the US, where he would continue his activism.

Spiritual Masters: Annette Kaiser on Irina Tweedie

by Bergen Vermette

Like many of the luminaries featured in our Spiritual Masters series, Russian-born Sufi Mystic Irina Tweedie was a pioneer. Tweedie left Europe in 1959 and traveled to India where she met her spiritual master, the Hindu Sufi, Radha Mohan Lal, from the Naqshbandiyya-Mujadiddiya Sufi Order. She became the first Western woman to be trained in this ancient order and was instructed by her teacher to keep a diary of her experiences. That diary became the spiritual classic, Daughter of Fire: A Diary of a Spiritual Training with a Sufi Master.

On March 25, EnlightenNext founder Andrew Cohen will interview Annette Kaiser, one of Irina Tweedie’s students. The conversation will explore the transformative power of the student teacher relationship and will be just one 25 such interviews in, “Awakening to Your Highest Self: Tales of Transformation from 25 Spiritual Luminaries.

Spiritual Masters: Lama Surya Das on Neem Karoli Baba

by Bergen Vermette

Lama Surya Das is not your average Buddhist. Before becoming the Dharma heir to Tibetan master Nyoshul Khenpo Rinpoche, and studying with some of the most esteemed Buddhist figures of the 20th Century (like Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, Kalu Rinpoche, and Uchiyama Roshi), Surya Das was a disciple of the popular Indian Guru Neem Karoli Baba, who gave him his Sanskrit name.

Neem Karoli Baba was a bhakti yogi, meaning that he considered service to others (seva) as the highest expression of devotion to God, and in thanks to his well-known disciples like Baba Ram Das, became one of the most popular Gurus in the East-West mixing pot of the 1960s. In the beautiful video below, Baba Ram Das (who is a dharma brother to Lama Surya Das), gives his account of Neem Karoli Baba.

For a recent video of Lama Surya Das in dialogue with EnlightenNext founder Andrew Cohen, click here.

And to hear Surya Das’s own account of Neem Karoli Baba, join him with Andrew Cohen, on March 25, for the “Awakening to Your Highest Self” online celebration.

A True Teacher (Quote of the Week)

by Andrew Cohen

One of the biggest challenges of spiritual evolution is the cultivation of humility. We need to have enough humility to enable us to recognize those who have genuinely reached a higher stage of development than our own, and then we need to have enough courage to aspire to meet them where they are. If a spiritual teacher is authentic, he or she will never finally be satisfied until the student either equals or surpasses the teacher’s attainment. A true teacher is someone who doesn’t want followers but rather wants authentic partners in this great task of evolutionary transformation.

On March 26th, Andrew Cohen will be speaking with more than 25 other spiritual and cultural luminaries about the significance of the student-teacher relationship, including Jean Houston on Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, Bernie Glassman on Taizan Maezumi Roshi, Rajesh Dalal on J. Krishnamurti, and many, many more. Click here to learn more and to register.

Spiritual Masters: The 3 Gurus on Baba Muktananda and Swami Rudrananda

by Bergen Vermette

On March 26th, Swami Shankarananda, Master Charles Cannon, and Swami Chetananda–”the three gurus”–will join EnlightenNext founder Andrew Cohen for the online celebration of Cohen’s 25th anniversary as a spiritual teacher, “Awakening to Your Highest Self.” During the conversation, Swami Shankarananda and Master Charles Cannon will speak about their relationship with one of the 20th century’s best-known spiritual masters, Baba Muktananda. The third guru, Swami Chetananda, will speak about his teacher Swami Rudrananda, or Rudi, (also a one-time student of Baba Muktananda).

All these men share the spiritual tradition of the great Indian sage, Bhagawan Nityananda, who first initiated Baba Muktananda when he was just 15 years old. Initiation came by shakitpat, the transmission of powerful spiritual energy through non-verbal means.
